It is very important that women get to know their breasts. Many women have breasts that are lumpy, and these lumps can grow and recede throughout the menstrual cycle as the hormones in the body fluctuate. For this reason the presence of a lump in the breasts is not necessarily a cause for concern, but a change in either skin colour or thickness, dimpling or puckering, or nipple changes should prompt us to seek further screening.
Age and family history can also be important factors in pursuing regular breast screening. Every women in BC between the ages of 40 and 79 is eligible for free regular mammograms.
